While all 5 are wonderful contenders without a doubt "Highland Cathedral is the most inspiring with feelings of National pride.

The German musicians Ulrich Roever and Michael Korb, reportedly wrote Highland Cathedral as a pipe tune in 1982 for a Highland games in Germany.
Lovely tune but it's too slow and lacks for me a true scottish identity.
My selection .... 'A Mans a Man' ... it is a world statement for humanity and has a grrrreat tune. The tune and words will have everyone singing .... 'Scotlands Anthem'

An Anthem should inspire and all should have the ability whatever their vocal talents, to be able to sing the melody. It should give one a feeling of national pride. Yes I am old fart as they would say in America and still have pride in my Scottish roots and am brought to tears when I feel inner stirings such a this song does.

Ok Ok what more can I say, I'll give it 10 and I can sing it quite easily. It's a bloody good tune and i'm sure most Scots could sing it with gusto.
Cheers. From way too hot Seattle.

From my morning N.Y. Times looks like Democracy won out in the popular vote with "Flower of Scotland" being chosen.

I wholeheartedly agree with the suggestion of Highland Cathedral. Whether it it was written by two Germans is irrelevant, as it is still a rousing tune and can be sung quite easily infact. The version on this website did not give the song the conviction and oomph it deserves, and if they had used the version in the link that I'm about to post, then a LOT more people would have voted for it. Flower of Scotland is too negative and has nothing positive to say, and I think the only reason it acquired such a high percentage of the vote is because some people are too scared to disregard what they consider as tradition. We have to move forward - not look back to the past - and Highland Cathedral amplifies this thought.

Here's what Highland Cathedral should sound like, and if this doesn't get the hairs standing on the back of your neck, then check for a pulse:

Its a good wee tune but thats all it is.
As for its writers ... I believe it is very relevant that ... 'Scotlands Anthem'(if it is to be new) should be written by a Scottish composer who understands fully Scotlands national identity in terms of today and the future

' Nice wee tune Jimmy but are ye no able to write yir ain Anthem' ... I hear them say

in what way???????

i am english, yes english, and although i am not a bagpipe fan, i almost come to tears when i hear it.

although written by germans, (as most national anthems are in some way), it is such an emotive piece of music. when i hear ir, all i can imagine is the scottish playing it before they went into battle with the english, knowing almost certain defeat was upon them, but that tune would have made me switch sides if i heard that coming over the glens.

i am also in the army, with the royal signals, and our main recruitment , came from scotland, so some traditions remain with us, and the bagpipes are one.

if you don't want it as your national anthem, give it to us english and we'll play it on a lute or something!!!
