RSNO Chorus - 2007/01/18 18:55
After reading the use it or lose it post, I was amazed more people hadn't jumped on the forum bandwagon. As a young member of the Chorus, with far too much time on my hands, finding this was great for me, and probably not so good for the other forum users.
WARNING: Students take over forums!!!
I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions of which choral music they would like to hear in the future seasons?
I'm holding out for Carmina Burana!

Good for you Hannah.

I was impressed with Andreas Spering who replaced Walter Weller for Elijah. He has made a fine recording of Haydn's Creation, issued on Naxos. It would be a good gesture to invite him to perform it with the RSNO and Chorus.

Hey Han! (hehe)

You did warn that the RSNO chorus students would take over the forum....well here is my input!

Carmina Burana...But aye!

How about the cool Dracula piece by Feeney we found on Naxos while browsing one fine day!

Also some other John Adams music. Loving his work!

As for Spering's recording of Haydn's The Creation I have to agree that it is rather good. I enjoyed working with him and thought he did a fantastic job with us considering the late arrival. Would like to work with him again some time.

Anyway enough of me. Give us your opinions guys!

What about Brian's Gothic Symphony??

Seriously though, something like Tippett's "A Child of Our Time" would go down well, I think...admittedly I don't know how often it's been performed in Scotland, but I do know it's a cracking oratorio...!

Apart from the spirituals, I don't much care for Child of our Time. I much prefer Britten's War Requiem but we had that not so long ago in a blistering performance with Maestro Lazarev.

With Stephane Deneve we could have Berlioz Grand Messe des Morts, I don't recall hearing that for a long time, or the Messe solenelle, or the Te Deum. The Poulenc Stabat Mater and Gloria are always worth hearing.
I don't think that Mahler 8 has been done since Jack Thompson conducted it at the opening of the GRCH and perhaps Walter Weller could give us the Missa Solemnis again.

A new choral work should be commissioned from James MacMillan to mark the renaissance of the chorus which seems at long last to be on track for improvement after being comprehensively outclassed by NYCoS.

That should ruffle a few feathers and get some discussion going!

Well, it's better than his other two large-scale choral works if nothing else...they're more the BBC Singers' department!

Stanford's Requiem is worth hearing just for its brilliant Offertorium.

Ann Dante also wrote:

...and if it was done again with the same immensity as the Mahler 2 in September it would be one hell of an experience...!

Ann Dante added:

Yikes...I'm taking cover!

Child of Our Time was something I was thinking. Also the Te Deum and Poulencs Stabat Mater. These would be good. Have to say that Mahlers 2nd was amazing. My first concert i sang in and it was superb. I also love Chichester Psalms but after NYCoS singing it I dont think we could even compair. Being only a member of RSNO and not NYCoS I dont know if I really should comment on the RSNO/NYCoS debate but I will anyway. NYCoS are superb and that is fact. They are very different from RSNO tho and what they are trying to do is different. Dont get me wrong, I will be applying to NYCoS but at the same time...We do love the RSNO!

It's strange how people come up with the same suggestions....

But after the mention of Poulenc's Stabat Mater, I was thinking what about the Rossini Stabat Mater. It's a great work and a great sing. I know for a fact this hasn't been done in a LONG LONG time, because it was my dad's first concert in the chorus and he hasn't sang it since. And my dad's ANCIENT, so well over due a singing!

PS: Only kidding, Dad....if you read this!

It is certainly good to see the Chorus attracting young singers again, I hope there will be very many more of you.

Other works to consider are the Glagolitic Mass by Janacek and the Te Deum by Dvorak. They would make a tasty double bill with Walter Weller. You would probably need a Czech language coach but the Janacek is a very exciting piece.

I would wholeheartedly agree with the Dvorak Te Deum idea. I sang it in the Czech Republic two years ago with my school choir, a choir we were doing an exchange with and their adult choir and it is a really fun piece to do. My favourite piece at the moment is Puccini's Mass for Four Voices commonly known as the Messa di Gloria which I am doing at Uni this term. Yet another fantastic piece which is rarely performed, with lots of Puccini's operatic noticable in it.

It's good to see all these suggestions, but they seem to be Te Deums or Messe de...
Variety is the spice of life people.
What about something like Berlioz Damnation de Faust....absolutely love it! Sang it in the Edinburgh Festival as the small group children's chorus, would love the chance to do it in the adult chous. Maybe Deneve could conduct!!!!

What does everyong think about the Peer Gynt?! Good idea or not?

And Iain, ever thought about auditioning for the chorus? We really could do with more younger members.

A Shostakovich piece which, to my knowledge, has never been done is The Execution of Stepan Razin. You would need an absolutely top notch Bass but it could be combined with the 13th Symphony "Babi Yar" which is scored for similar forces and is also a setting of Yevtushenko poems.
With Lazarev in charge it would be electrifying and, if Linn could be persuaded, a stunning follow up to the superb recording of the 11th Symphony.

Lauren, Peer Gynt is the kind of thing that's worth hearing once in a lifetime but probably not more often than that. IMHO.

Did you miss it?

The RSNO performed Stepan Razin in 2004 - Lazarev conducting, Mikhail Svetlov sang bass.
The rest of the programme wasn't half bad either... Night on a Bare Mountain and the Alpine Symphony!

The dates were: Glasgow Thursday 22 April 2004 and
Edinburgh Friday 23 April 2004.

Expensive to stage but a great night!

The same forces (minus the ladies of the chorus) performed Babi Yar (Shostakovich 13) in 2001.

Thanks David,
I'd forgotten that Stepan Razin had been done so recently even though I was there. Symphony 13 was of course done during Lazarev's Shostakovich year - can it really be 6 years ago, how time flies!

Morning? We never rest in our quest to promote Scotland's favourite orchestra (and chorus!)!

The Faure was last performed at the ScottishPower Proms 2005, in a concert called, appropriately enough, Faure Requiem.

One of our ongoing web projects is to build an online database of past concerts. Until then, you'll have to rely on me for the answers!

David Stark....what on Earth are you doing on the forum at half one in the morning. Bet you wont be on now though....HA!

Just having a snack before bed, after the wonders that is working in a nightclub! BLAH!

Anyway, really just wanted to point out how pointless Lauren's post was seeing she lives with me and I already told her about the Faure! TYPICAL!

Also, I can't believe the Shostakovich year was six years ago....it seems so recent. Just wondered what everyone thinks the "Cantata for the 20th anniversary of the October Revolution". I am a big big fan. Love it In fact so much, I wanna do it again....pretty please!!!!!

I'm sorry about that. Our musiconline service providers are in the process of uploading the entire RSNO/Chandos back catalogue. As I'm sure you'll understand this is a major undertaking but I will ask them to prioritise the Nevsky and get it up there as soon as possible.

Sorry for the inconvenience, I know how upsetting it is for our supporters to have to listen to anyone other than the RSNO!!

Mr. Weetman you are a legend!

Glad to hear the Nevsky will be up and running too. Altho it is prob a good thing it is not up before the concert as of course our performance will be far better and we wouldn't want to spoil things for our admiring public!

Deneve brings magic to music the only way that a fiesty yet fantastic french man can do! Mon the weekend! The Frenchies and the russians, what a combo!

Hi all.

Would love to read what you all thought of the Eroica/Nevsky concert in Edinburgh tonight. I enjoyed singing it!.... It would be nice for once to know what the real audience thinks (a bit tired now of waiting for the only two critics in Scotland to give their veredict on the Mondays after the concert... no, I'n not bitter!)

I thought it was great and am looking forward to singing it in Glasgow tomorrw (or is it today already!).
