Bryden Thomson - 2007/01/28 01:41
I am trying to trace Bruckner performances including i think a complete cycle given by Bryden Thomson. Some or most made by The Ulster Orchestra some by SNO? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There's a complete Bruckner Symphony cycle boxed set on Naxos (8.501101), all conducted by Georg Tintner and mostly performed by the RSNO. Symphonies 2 and 8 were by National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and 6 was New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Is it concert performances or recordings you're trying to find out about? If it's the latter there doesn't seem to be anything on the web about a Bruckner cycle recorded by Bryden Thomson - even the website www.abruckner.com which claims to have details of all Bruckner recordings available to the public doesn't seem to know anything about the subject! (I suppose it's possible their records aren't entirely complete, of course.)

If it's the former, my experience of concert-going doesn't go back that far so I can't help you...!

Thanks, It was via the Bruckner website that i found J Berky's appeal for information on this cycle. RSNO forum readers who enjoy Bruckner should google John Berky it is a fascinating site. As is the site of The Bruckner Journal. I should stop now in case anyone objects to me advertising!

I stand corrected.

I knew Jack Thomson quite well and I am pretty certain that he did not record any of the Bruckner symphonies. If I'm wrong I would be delighted to be pointed in the right direction.

I see that someone has posted a question about this on the "Gramophone" forum.

A bit of digging reveals that Thomson conducted all the Bruckner symphonies in one season with the RT?â Symphony Orchestra in Dublin in the 1980s during his time as Principal Conductor.
This is the orchestra now known as The National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland.
Given that it is a radio orchestra I suppose it is likely that tapes will exist of these performances. I still have no knowledge of him recording these works commercially.

A bit off topic (not to mention probably needlessly pedantic! ), but isn't that just their recording name? (Like "English Northern Philharmonia", for example?)

DJM,
I think you are right. Their website calls them " RT?â National Symphony Orchestra".
I expect that RT?â doesn't mean much outside Ireland. It gained the "National" when it became a full size symphony orchestra.

They're probably becoming aware of that themselves, seeing they call themselves the "RT?â National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland" on the covers of some of their later Naxos albums.

I went to their Mahler 4 under Gerhard Markson in January while visiting Dublin, and they can certainly play a bit. Just as well, I needed to concentrate on the music - the decor of the NCH's auditorium is a bit, well, green for my tastes...!

Bryden Thomson recorded complete cycles of Nielson and Martinu symphonies with the Royal Scottish Orchestra (as it was called at the time) but no Bruckner. He also recorded the Rachmaninov piano concertos and Pag. variations (with Howard Shelley). He only ever conducted Bruckner 4th in concert with our orchestra.
