Mozart or Beethoven? - 2007/03/08 12:51
It's time to have a new thread! And there's nothing like a straight-down-the-line either/or to get things going...

Who's the greater composer in your opinion: Mozart or Beethoven? And why? Maybe you don't like either of them - why is that?

And do you think we'll always hold up both Mozart and Beethoven in the highest esteem? Do you think at some point music-lovers might be talking about other composers whom we don't favour as highly at the moment?

And what about Bach?

What are your thoughts?

"I love Beethoven, especially his poems." Ringo Starr
I agree with Ringo, Beethoven for me. If the SNO announced a Mozart-heavy season for 07/08 I'd think twice about going, whereas if they unveiled a complete cycle of Beethoven symphs, sonatas and concertos I'd be the first on the phone to renew my subscription.

As I have a taste for the monumental, I'm heavily into the Beethoven-Bruckner-Mahler "thread" and would therefore also have to fall on the Beethoven side of the fence.

Dadranny is just demonstrating typical Beethoven - just repeats the same idea, over and over again.

The music of Mozart and Beethoven is purely stylised Bach. He's the real genius.

Bach for me, ever and always. But if I had to choose between Beethoven and Mozart, I think most if the time I'd choose Mozart but then suspect myself of being a mere voluptuary.

Since we're talking about crisps on another thread, this reminds me of a good game we used to play. Composers and food! If Mozart were a type of food, what would be be?

Rossini, for example - wedding cake!
Beethoven - bread? a real staple
Mozart - cheese!

Beethoven - he wrote some astoundingly powerful and dramatic music, some of which I don't think has ever been equalled.

Mozart - the closest there has been to musical perfection.

Both all-time greats but in very different ways.

I think my problems in deciding between the two start when I consider different types of works... I'd listen to Mozart's vocal music over Beethoven's, but I'd rather listen to a Beethoven symphony than a Mozart one. Beethoven solo piano works, definitely, but when it comes to piano concertos, well, I'm not so sure, Mozart may have the edge there!

Argh, can't decide!

Just thinking about one poster's preference for the more monumental composers, I was suprised recently to learn that Mahler's last word was 'Mozart!' Strange but true...

As one other poster to this forum might put it, you've out-Mahler-geeked me...! I didn't know that, but on reflection, Mahler did have some Classical leanings, as glimpsed in parts of his Fourth for example.

The scene, a bedroom in Vienna 1911. An ailing Mahler lies in his bed, clutching his chest...

Doctor: I'm afraid this is the end Herr Mahler, your heart is packing up.
Mahler: Oh no, is there nothing you can do?
Doctor: we could transplant but there's no suitable donor
Maureen (Mahler's chambermaid): Oh have my heart Herr Gustav sir, take it from me now, save yourself!
Doctor: Yes, that would work, you could have her heart!
Mahler: Mo's heart?
Doctor: Yes
Mahler: urgghhhhh.
Maureen: Oh dear, he's gone. *Puts the Adagietto on the gramophone, sobs*

THE END

It's probably a slightly conditioned response but i'd probably lean towards Mozart - even if he didn't like the flute .
One of my music teacher's favourite catchphrases is "Mozart too many notes, SQA too many words" equally my flute teacher loves Mozart and he wrote some real staples of the solistic repertoire for so many instruments.

Oh my goodness! I have no idea. A know-it-all 20 year old stuck for words....

I'm an opera lover and Lord knows Mozart wrote a few. But it love Beethoven's powefulness. Choral Symphony anyone? Oh I do not know. I think.....Beethoven.

Not such a fan of Bach...counterpoint at university has mega put me off him since last year.
