I say "So far so good". The opening concert confirmed Connesson as a voice worth hearing and I very much hope that Stéphane and the orchestra will in due course record the three pieces we have been given. It was wonderful to hear Emmanuel Ax again after so long.
The Mahler 3 was a fine performance although Tumelty's comments about the brass were merited in my view. I think it was Solti who said that he thought all brass players cracked notes until he went to Chicago! Tchistyakova has a stunning voice.
In the third concert Ravel's Mother Goose was exquisite and I hope that Capuçon makes further appearances with the orchestra. His playing in the Prokofiev first concerto was superb.
The less said about the regrettable Berezovsky the better. He clearly prefers the south of France to Glasgow in October. I trust he will be blacklisted. However, what a character his replacement turned out to be. A white knuckle Tchaikovsky 1 - ask him back. Both the VW and Elgar were beautifully done, probably the best things I have heard from Garry Walker - and no lecture!
Remmereit has an odd conducting style but produced a fine Sibelius 2. It's good to hear the orchestra playing Sibelius again. His rapport with Natalie Clein seemed less sure and I found the concerto lacked the kind of visceral punch that Lazarev would have provided in spades.
By any standards a good start and much to look forward to! AD

The season so far, I must say, I agree has been good. Really good infact.
Ann Dante has it spot on in saying that the Connesson is "worth hearing". The whole collection of three works is brilliant and I definately think a recording should be made! Even though I am a poor student, I'm sure I'd get enough money together to buy one!
The Tchaikovsky 1 concert has been my favourite so far. Although, Berezovsky not turning up was slightly annoying. His replacement was fantastic. What was his name again, Kumt? I definately think he should be invited back!
In fact, I lie, Belshazzar was my favourite concert, but as I was singing in it I'm quite biast. But it is a brilliant piece of music, eh?!
Lill was as ever great! Looking foward to singing my cheesy Christmas music and the Mozart! Hurrah! Han xx
God, I don't half witter on!

Han, The Belshazzar concert was terrific. The sound of the chorus with the extra singers was a transformation from some of the lack-lustre performances of recent years. Even several ragged entries (which were entirely the fault of the conductor) did not detract from a powerful performance. It is clear that Tim Dean is having a hugely beneficial effect on the chorus. Roderick Williams was simply stunning in both Mahler and Walton. The Britten was a fine performance and the orchestral playing throughout was beyond reproach.
The Weller/Lill concert was textbook stuff and the find of the year so far was Jakub Hrusa an enormously talented young conductor. Unfortunately Chloe Hanslip was not heard at her best. She made a mess of the opening of the Mozart and never recovered. I'm sure that she can and will play it better.
Looking forward to Kristjan Jarvi and Katherine Bryan this weekend.

I was at the Caird Hall for Belshazzar's Feast and thoroughly enjoyed it. Monumental stuff. The Britten was also brilliantly done by the orchestra and Mr Williams' beautiful performance helped me through the Mahler, whose song cycles for some reason don't quite light my candle in the same way the symphonies do.

Roderick Williams was definately spectacular. A pleasure to listen to. The Mahler was outstanding, despite the extremely annoying man sitting behind me, who felt it was essential to give a running commentary.
"The thing about Mahler lieder...." "Mahler does write very dark music."
Well, it was dark until he ruined the atmosphere! I'm all for people expressing their opinions about performances.....at the interval or end. NOT IN THE MIDDLE OF A PIECE!!!!!
Oh, Happy New Year everyone! Han xx
