Jarvi's Wagner - 2008/05/12 11:35
Hello there, I'm new to this discussion board, though not new to the RSNO - I've been coming to your concerts for 20yrs.

I just want to say I was blown away by your new recording of Wagner's Ring, an orchestral adventure. I was a tad dubious about the outcome when I heard it was recorded in the Royal Concert Hall (sorry, but I'm not a great fan of the hall's acoustic). However, it sounded fantastic. What's more, it felt stupendous! What a performance. Thank you for performing a work that makes The Ring far more accessible. I have Solti's legendary recordings but, to be honest, have never heard the whole thing - just the best bits! If I could afford it, I'd buy a drink for the lot of you

I haven't heard the recording of Ring. But I have heard it was fantastic. To be honest, who is a fan of the concert hall's acoustics?! Certainly not singers!!!

Hello
I was wondering what prompted the recording to take place at the Royal concert hall, rather than Henry wood hall where for example you recorded the golden age?

The Ring was the Orchestra's first recording on the Chandos label in many years (and won't be the last!) and Chandos prefer using the GRCH (who partnered in making the recording possible). And yes, if you haven't already listened to the CD, you really must (SACD too) as it sounds incredible. The Golden Age was a Naxos recording and they prefer the Henry Wood Hall for their award winning RSNO discs.

Also, on a very practical note, the size of band used for the Ring recording is too big for the Henry Wood Hall... so it had to be the GRCH!

Thanks very much for clearing my thoughts up. I very much enjoy the recording and hope there are more to come!
