Bruckner 3 - 2007/01/30 14:00
Having now heard the RSNO perform the '89 version of Bruckner 3, to go with my experience of the '77 version from the BBC SSO in October, I think I'll stick to the '73 version (just to avoid any misunderstanding, this is not in any way a comment on the performance, which was excellent) - unless the 2005 Peter Jan Marth?© version is any better, though frankly I don't see how he can consider his version to be any more valid than the others that have appeared.

I'm with Michael Tumelty - let's just hear what Bruckner originally wrote! (I keep hearing the original 4 is a bit sub-standard...but hey, one out of nine isn't a bad ratio, eh?)

Anyone agree?

One out of 9? What about Symphony No 00? That would make the ratio 2 out of 10, still not a bad innings!
I must say I loved '89 (and that's despite the memories of raves, poll tax and Thatcher).

Might as well throw in No. 0 while we're at it then, which would take us to 2/3 (make up your own mind!) out of 11!

I don't think the Study Symphony is all that bad myself, but it's definitely not in the same league as the "numbered" symphonies.

there appear to be around 37 recognised versions of Bruckner symphonies. 2/3 out of 37's not so good!

If you're counting bad ones like we were it's actually a substantial improvement!!

I'd love to oblige on talking about Haydn, but I'm more of a post-Beethovenian myself.
