Speaking of Bach... - 2007/03/09 09:35
I was having a conversation last night with someone who had listened to a radio programme about Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor for organ BWV 565.

The programme discussed the argument (which has been around for a long time now) that it might not have been composed by Bach at all. Apparently the programme ended by raising the question of whether it's important or not that we know this great piece of music was by written by the man himself - it's a good question!

Is it important for our enjoyment of classical music to know who wrote what? Is knowing a bit of background about the composer vital to our appreciation of a work? Would it bother you if there were some doubt as to whether Mozart had composed the 'Elvira Madigan' Piano Concerto or Beethoven 'Fidelio'?
