  • Be presented in an informal and interactive way by Paul Rissmann

The concert programme will include excerpts from:

Prokofiev  Romeo & Juliet (Suite Nos1, 2 & 3, and including The Montagues and the Capulets)

"Thank you for an excellent concert.
Paul Rissmann was very entertaining and, informative and

drama

Do you have students in your school who love performing?

Have you been working on Shakespeare in music, dance, drama or English literature?

Would you like your school to perform live with musicians of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra?

We are looking for two outstanding young people to take part in our Secondary Schools Concerts to bring the work of Shakespeare alive with a performance of the balcony scene spoken over the music of Craig Armstrong (used in the Baz Luhrmann Romeo and Juliet film with Leonardo Di Caprio and Claire Danes).

The performance will take place on the main stage during the RSNO Secondary Schools Concert at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in September 2008.

Your school needs to book for one of the concerts to be eligible to take part and have two young people who are confident, experienced performers and used to being on the stage. They will also need to know the text from Romeo & Juliet Act 2, Scene 2 (exact extract to be determined) but we won't require them to know it off by heart.

What's involved?

Attending a rehearsal at the RSNO rehearsal centre Henry Wood Hall or the GRCH on Monday 22 September 2008 between 2.30-5.30pm.

Attending a quick sound check before the performance at GRCH on 23 or 24 September 2008.

How to get involved?

Simply tick the relevant box on the application from and we will get in touch with you in August for further information.

Need more information?

Please contact Lyn Underwood in the RSNO Education department on 0141 225 3552.

RSNO Education PDF Print E-mail
The RSNO's innovative education programme strives to inspire and engage people from all walks of life in the enjoyment of classical music. RSNO players spend much of their time away from the concert platform presenting events in schools and community venues throughout the country.

We introduce new ways of participating in music through many different approaches and specially planned projects - watching the rehearsal process, participating in masterclasses, enjoying specially devised concerts for children and 'first-time' adults or having fun composing your own music.

Many of the projects we run complement the RSNO Season, enabling people of all ages and abilities to make and experience music alongside players from Scotland's national orchestra. We are building long-lasting and healthy partnerships with local authorities, charitable trusts and commercial sponsors, leading to innovative work with schools, hospitals, business partnerships, prisons, and community groups.

The musicians you see on the concert platform are the same players who are out encouraging classical music all over Scotland. This is a true alliance between the Artist and Education where both aspects are delivered as a whole.

Yorkhill Children's Hospital

We also have a continuing relationship with Yorkhill Childrens' hospital, and have for many years sent small groups of musicians each week to work on the wards thus bringing pleasure to very sick children.

Drake Music

Last autumn we worked with Drake Music, several times visiting one of their centres in Drumchapel.   The Concert at the Fruit Market at which RSNO musicians prepared and performed with the members of the centre was an inspiring example of the value of amateur/professional collaboration, on this occasion with adults whose disabilities would normally seem to preclude them from the life-enhancing experience of making music of a high standard.

Outreach Week

Each year, the Orchestra bases itself in a rural region to take collaborative music experiences and a symphony orchestra to places it cannot normally serve. This highly successful Outreach Week project has so far taken place in Dumfries & Galloway, South Lanarkshire and Argyll and Bute.

Local Authorities

The RSNO Education Department has a good relationship with many local authorities in Scotland which it is keen to develop.  These collaborations work to deliver specific projects and events.   Examples of our work include one-off family workshops, a visit to a school to demonstrate how an instrument works, orchestral coaching in schools and communities, and larger and more complex composition projects with a performance outcome.  Most of these activities also include free attendance at an RSNO concert.  Aside from working with young people we can also run projects designed for adults, older people and those with special needs.
