Monday 14 January 2008 - Saturday 19 January 2008

From Monday 14 January 2008 the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) will be resident in Angus for a week of music making. The Orchestra will leave its Glasgow home to perform a variety of concerts, workshops and community projects culminating in the public re-opening of the newly refurbished Webster Theatre in Arbroath.

The first public concert of Out and About in Angus is an RSNO Brass Ensemble performance at the Reid Hall, Forfar on Tuesday 15 January, starting at 7.30pm.  Led by the exuberant Bryan Allen, the ensemble will explore the many ages of music, from baroque and jazz to pop and contemporary.  Seating is unreserved and all tickets are £5.00.

Throughout the week two strings groups assembled from the core of the RSNO musicians, Bagatelle and The Octomore Quartet, will collaborate with pupils from Montrose Academy and Brechin High School, culminating in Sensational Strings, a joint performance showcasing the result of their week's collaboration at Montrose Town Hall on Friday 18 January. Conducted by RSNO Horn John Logan, the concert will feature Holst's St. Paul's Suite, Warlock's Capriol Suite and Handel's Sarabande.  The concert starts at 7.30pm, seating is unreserved and all tickets are £5.00.

On Saturday 19 January the full forces of the RSNO perform the opening concert of the newly-refurbished Webster Theatre in Arbroath. RSNO Assistant Conductor David Danzmayr will lead the Orchestra for a Gala performance, featuring Schubert's Symphony No5, Mozart's Marriage of Figaro overture and waltzes, polkas and marches from the Strauss family.  Tickets are £12.00/£9.00. Concession-rate tickets (£10.00/£8.00) are only available if purchased in advance.

During the week, the RSNO musicians will also be out and about in Angus, appearing at various locations and in various forms: duos, wind trios, string quartets and brass quintets.  In addition, the full force of Scotland's national orchestra will be performing two REMIX! concerts for secondary schools and two Monster Music concerts for pre-school children, all conducted by RSNO Assistant Conductor David Danzmayr and presented by Paul Rissmann, at the Reid Hall, Forfar and the Webster Theatre, Arbroath.

RSNO Director of Education and Audience Engagement, Ellen Thomson, announced the weeklong project, saying:

"We are delighted to be able to take residence in Angus for what should be a fantastic week of music making. We have devised a programme of events which should have something for everyone, from first-time concert-goers to aficionados of orchestral music."

The series opens at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre (Friday 21 September, 7.30pm) and at The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall (Saturday 22 September, 6.00pm).  Stéphane’s Playlist brings Music Director Stéphane Denève’s choice of excerpts from the forthcoming Season, including Stravinsky’s Firebird, Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra.  Stéphane Denève will also be introducing the Orchestra’s new Assistant Conductor David Danzmayr, who will be sharing the podium for his first Scottish performances.

For the third successive year concert-goers to the first Classic Bites concert, this year Stephane’s Playlist, will be able to download the complete performance on a track-by-track basis for free.  In 2005, nearly 30% of attendees to Classic Bites downloaded the concert, with the most popular downloaded work being Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro overture. Last year the Classic Bites concerts featured an excerpt from a new work by French composer Guillame Connesson which proved to be the most popular Classic Bites download of 2006.

Classic Bites continues at The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall at the earlier midweek time of 6.00pm, with The Orchestra’s Playlist (Wednesday 7 November, 6.00pm).  Over the summer the RSNO musicians voted for their favourite orchestral works, with the top ten most popular selected to be performed.  Of these, the three most popular choices are Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No2, Sibelius’ Symphony No5 and Barber’s Adagio for Strings. During the concert, RSNO musicians will explain to the audience what makes their choices so important to them.

The third Classic Bites concert of the series will be Your Playlist. In an unprecedented move, RSNO concert programming will be decided completely by the public, (The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Wednesday 27 February, 6.00pm).  From Friday 7 September aficionados and newcomers to classical music alike will be able to vote for their favourite orchestral works.   Voting will close on Friday 30 November and the winning programme will be chosen from the most popular public selections.  Voting will close on Friday 30 November with the winning programme announced on the Classic Bites website (www.classicbites.org.uk).

The final concert of the series, The Movie Playlist (The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Wednesday 2 April, 6.00pm) presents a selection of passages from popular film scores.  Led by David Danzmayr, the concert will feature music from films such as Jurassic Park, Star Wars, 633 Squadron and Lord of the Rings.

RSNO Chief Executive Simon Woods announced the series:  “Classic Bites has for a number of years been a successful taster to the RSNO's season. It's an affordable and accessible way to hear great orchestral music played by Scotland's National Orchestra, and I am especially pleased that this year we have introduced an element of unpredictability by asking the audience to take part in the choice of music.”

Individual tickets for Classic Bites concert cost £10.00.  Book all four concerts in Glasgow and pay for three.  Under 16s go free when accompanied by an adult and Under 26 card holders can obtain tickets for £5.00.  To book tickets contact the Edinburgh Festival Theatre box office on 0131 529 6000 or www.eft.co.uk : The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall box office on 0141 353 8000 or www.grch.com ).
