The Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) has appointed 27 year old Austrian David Danzmayr as its first Assistant Conductor. David is currently Music Director of Ensemble Acrobat, previously assisted Dennis Russell Davies at the American Composers Orchestra in New York and was Music Director of the Symphonic Ensemble, Munich. He will take up his three-year position with the RSNO in October.

As Assistant Conductor, David will conduct a variety of RSNO concerts, including serving as primary conductor for all educational and children’s programming. He will also be an active participant in engaging audiences and communities throughout Scotland. The Assistant Conductor role has been expressly developed to provide a supportive mentoring environment and, in addition to providing rehearsal and concert opportunities, David will benefit from ongoing professional evaluation and counsel from RSNO Music Director Stéphane Denève, guest conductors, and player-mentors in the Orchestra. The position is also set to provide opportunities for him to develop the multi-faceted conducting, leadership and public address skills required of modern conductors.

The Assistant Conductor vacancy was the first conductor post to be openly advertised by the Orchestra and received over 100 submissions from across the world. Candidates were invited to apply by submitting a DVD recording of their conducting, and a shortlist of ten was then invited to conduct the RSNO through a selection of classical repertoire.

Accepting the position, David Danzmayr commented: "This is the position I always dreamed of, a combination of a professional job as conductor and at the same time an environment which is set to help me improve and increase my skills. I think that especially the tutoring system is fascinating and a very unique chance to experience a professional orchestra’s view about myself. I am very glad to have been chosen."

RSNO Chief Executive Simon Woods welcomed the appointment: “The RSNO musicians, Stéphane Denève and I were all deeply impressed by David’s natural musicality and expressive technique. We are much looking forward to welcoming him to the RSNO family, and we think he will come to play a most valuable and rewarding role in the musical life of Scotland.”

The Assistant Conductor post is made possible thanks to generous support from the John Mather Charitable Trust and the Stevenston Trust.  It replaces the Associate Conductor role in the RSNO’s Artistic Team, currently held by James Lowe whose contract ends this year.
