Betsy Taylor
Assistant Principal, Cello
I
joined the orchestra in January 2000 - a great start to the new
millenium! Since then I've particularly enjoyed performing in the Last
Night of the Proms in Glasgow - the atmosphere is incredible.
I
loved touring to Austria, Slovakia and Croatia with the RSNO the first
year I joined. I've also toured with many other leading orchestras to
the USA, South America, Khazakstan and mainland Europe.
I
completed my BMus and Professional Performer's Diploma on the Joint
Course at Manchester University and the Royal Northern College of
Music, studying with the Russian soloist Leonid Gorokhov. I was also
fortunate to have masterclasses with Paul Tortelier, Moray Welsh, Ralph
Kirschbaum and Steven Isserlis.
When
I'm not playing with the orchestra or teaching at the Royal Scottish
Academy of Music and Drama, I enjoy composing music with my husband,
Neil Gowans, working on new ways to present the cello as a solo
instrument. It's all very 'chilled' - Chilled Cello in fact!
I play a Joseph Hill cello made in London, 1770. Inevitably I call him Joseph - or sometimes Guiseppe.
Betsy is the founder cellist of the Glasgow String Quartet and she has her own website, www.betsytaylor.co.uk.
