‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.’ Johannes Brahms wasn’t the religious type, but when his mother died he turned to the words of Martin Luther to create a requiem intended to console the living. Strong, sincere, and profoundly moving, it’ll make a magnificent showcase for our RSNO Chorus and two world-class soloists. First, though, Peter Oundjian joins forces with the brilliant Augustin Hadelich in the all-singing, all-dancing violin concerto by Brahms’ great friend Dvorák.

Following an outstanding first two years, which has seen the Orchestra tour China, perform at the BBC Proms and Edinburgh International Festival and release two recordings under his leadership, Peter Oundjian’s third Season as RSNO Music Director sees the British-Canadian musician lead Scotland’s national orchestra as it celebrates its 125th year. In addition to his post as Music Director with the RSNO, Peter Oundjian is also Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Since the beginning of his Music Directorship with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 2004, Oundjian has become an integral part of the rebirth of the TSO. He has created the annual Mozart Festival, as well as the hugely successful New Creations Festival, celebrating the best in contemporary orchestral music, as well as showcasing and premiering commissioned works. In 2008, he launched tsoLIVE with the orchestra, a self-produced label of the orchestra’s live concert recordings. Oundjian has since released six recordings on the label, including Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11 (June 2012), Vaughan Williams Symphony Nos. 4 & 5 (December 2011) and Holst’s The Planets (March 2011). His previous positions include Principal Guest Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
Grammy Award-winner Augustin Hadelich has established himself as one of the great violinists of his generation. He has performed with every major orchestra in the U.S., many on numerous occasions, as well as an ever-growing number of major orchestras in the UK, Europe, and the Far East. Highlights of Mr. Hadelich’s 2016/2017 season include return performances with the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, the symphony orchestras of Baltimore, Colorado, Dallas, North Carolina, San Diego, and St. Louis, as well as a tour of Germany and Spain with the Orquestra de Radio Cadaqués/Catalonia, and debuts with the Dresden Philharmonic, Frankfurt Radio Orchestra, Hamburg Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, and the WDR Radio Orchestra in Cologne. Festival appearances during this past summer included debuts at the BBC Proms, the Bowdoin Music Festival, and Sun Valley Summer Symphony, in addition to return engagements at Aspen, Bravo! Vail, and Tanglewood. Mr. Hadelich has also performed at the Blossom, Britt, Chautauqua, Eastern, Grand Teton, and Marlboro music festivals, and the Hollywood Bowl. Among recent and upcoming worldwide appearances are the BBC Philharmonic/Manchester, BBC Symphony/London, Danish National Symphony, Finnish Radio Orchestra, German Radio Philharmonic/Saarbrücken, Hong Kong Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Malaysian Philharmonic, Mozarteum Orchestra/Salzburg, Netherlands Philharmonic, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, NHK Symphony/Tokyo, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, RTE National Symphony Orchestra/Dublin, São Paulo Symphony, Stuttgart Radio Orchestra, and a tour of China with the San Diego Symphony. Gold Medalist of the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, Mr. Hadelich was named winner of the inaugural Warner Music Prize in 2015. Other distinctions include Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award (2012), a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship in the UK (2011), and an Avery Fisher Career Grant (2009). Mr. Hadelich plays the 1723 “Ex-Kiesewetter” Stradivari violin, on loan from Clement and Karen Arrison through the Stradivari Society of Chicago.
Winner of the 2009 Kathleen Ferrier Award, Sarah-Jane Brandon was a member of the Young Singers Project at the Salzburg Festival in 2011. She has gone on to appear at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin; Semperoper Dresden; Teatro Real, Madrid; Glyndebourne; Savonlinna Opera Festival; Teatro dell’Opera di Roma; Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, Lisbon; English National Opera; Opéra de Nice; Opéra de Dijon; Opéra Théâtre Saint-Étienne, National Theatre of Bahrain and Cape Town Opera.
On the concert platform, she has appeared with the LSO, LPO, RLPO, BBCSO, CBSO, RSNO, SCO, Mozarteum Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra and the Budapest Festival Orchestra, under the baton of many notable conductors including Sir Andrew Davis, Bernard Haitink, Sir Roger Norrington, Vasily Petrenko, Andris Nelsons, Edward Gardner, Iván Fischer, Kurt Masur and Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
As a recitalist, she has appeared throughout Europe (notably at the Wigmore Hall and the Salzburg Festival), and at the Ravinia Festival, Chicago. Among her recital partners are Malcolm Martineau, Simon Lepper, Christopher Glynn, James Baillieu and Gary Matthewman. She has recorded Wolf Lieder with Sholto Kynoch and Poulenc with Graham Johnson.
Roderick Williams encompasses a wide repertoire, from baroque to contemporary music, in the opera house, on the concert platform and in recital. He won the Singer of the Year Award in the 2016 Royal Philharmonic Society Awards. He enjoys relationships with all the major UK opera houses and is particularly associated with the baritone roles of Mozart. He has also sung world premieres of operas by, among others, David Sawer, Sally Beamish, Michael van der Aa and Robert Saxton. Roderick Williams has sung concert repertoire with all the BBC orchestras, and many other ensembles including the Philharmonia, London Sinfonietta, Manchester Camerata, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hallé, Britten Sinfonia, Bournemouth Symphony, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Russian National Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Academy of Ancient Music, The Sixteen, Le Concert Spirituel, Rias Kammerchor and Bach Collegium Japan. His many festival appearances include the BBC Proms, Edinburgh, Cheltenham, Aldeburgh and Melbourne.
The RSNO Chorus performs in around six different programmes in up to twenty concerts across Scotland with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra each year. The RSNO Chorus has also had great success in recording with the Orchestra. Its recordings, amongst others, of Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky, conducted by Neeme J?rvi, and Holst’s The Planets, conducted by David Lloyd-Jones, have both been subject to high critical acclaim. In addition to its commitment to the Orchestra, the RSNO Chorus performs independently and has been invited to perform with orchestras in many different parts of the world, establishing an international status for the choir. The RSNO Chorus has toured in Copenhagen, Hong Kong, Israel, Germany, Belfast, Australia, Trondheim and most recently, Amsterdam. The RSNO Chorus evolved from a choir formed in 1843 to sing the first full performance of Handel’s Messiah in Scotland. Today, the RSNO Chorus is one of the most successful choruses in the UK. In recent years, the Chorus has performed practically every work in the standard choral repertoire along with contemporary works by renowned composers, including John Adams, Magnus Lindberg, Howard Shore and James MacMillan. The RSNO Chorus is directed by Gregory Batsleer, one of the UK’s most dynamic and in demand choral conductors and chorus masters. Gregory recently received The Arts Foundation Award 2015 for Choral Conducting.
