Digital Composition

The RSNO's Digital Projects Manager leads this class which explores computer based composition using a mixture of Sibelius notation software for writing scores and Logic Pro X to create convincing orchestra mock-ups using sample based virtual instruments.

Create Workshops

RSNO Musicians can lead a 3-week creative project for your pupils linked to one of our highlighted Season concerts. Concert tickets can be included in the cost of the workshop. Workshop choices are:

  • Debussy La Mer and Vaughan Williams  A Sea Symphony

  • Bartok The Miraculous Mandarin
  • Stravinsky The Rite of Spring

Minibeasts and Bugs

This is an interactive session for nursery children to create their own music and soundscape about minibeasts and bugs using percussion and orchestral instruments.

Romans! Vikings! Egyptians!

These creative music-making workshops are designed to tie in to any topic you’re teaching your class. We’ll ensure each pupil has the opportunity to be involved by utilising the abilities of everyone in the class, whether they are playing an instrument or singing. Workshops can take place as a one-off or as a series of 4–6 weeks.

The Four Seasons Creative Workshop

Create your own four seasons in a creative workshop exploring sounds, rhythms and harmonies, using a vast array of instruments and everyday items.

Incorporating listening concepts, composition and performance, this workshop covers all elements of music in the Curriculum for Excellence guidelines.

Inspire Days

Held at the RSNO Centre or your own school, these interactive days of listening and creating are designed to inspire your pupils, whether they play an instrument or not. You will produce a new piece of music which will be performed and recorded at the end of the day with a large orchestral ensemble.

The theme of the day can be tailored to suit. This is a great experience for team building and is ideal as a transition project for Primary 7 pupils.

Music by Design

Composition based workshop exploring the relationships between different types of notation, from graphic scores, to sketching, to traditional notation. Using their own narrative or topic currently being studied in class, pupils will create their own musical scores. The workshop will culminate in a performance based on the graphic scores created.

Please note, you do not need to read notation or play an instrument to participate in this workshop.

Arts Award

Arts Award is...

a great programme of workshops for children and young people to be inspired by and enjoy the arts
offered at five levels, four accredited (by Trinity College London) and one introductory award
a framework for learning new skills and sharing them
an opportunity to develop creativity and leadership skills
a link between young people and creative arts professionals

This can be offered as a stand-alone programme of work. The input and number of workshops required relate to the particular Arts Award level. Please contact us for more details.
