The RSNO Junior Chorus is truly one of the brightest jewels in Scotland’s musical crown. Over the last three decades it has enabled thousands of children to enjoy a musical experience that is unparalleled anywhere. It is a unique institution, part of the family of a fulltime symphony orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and benefiting from working with an adult choir, the RSNO Chorus.

The Junior Chorus seeks to provide the firm foundation for a lifetime of singing and musical enjoyment by teaching over 200 young people each week how to learn and appreciate music. In addition to encouraging the youngsters to learn about expression, the choir also acts as a means to improving the confidence and self-belief of the talented young musicians.

The Chorus is divided into a number of choirs. The Training Choir takes in youngsters from Primary 4, using the Kodály method of training. After about a year, children progress to the Probationary Choirs and, eventually, to the Junior Chorus. The acclaimed Changed Voices group allows boys the opportunity to continue singing after their voice has broken. A SATB Chamber Choir is also being established to recognize the artistic calibre of the very best Junior Chorus members.

In its 30-year history, the RSNO Junior Chorus has built up a considerable reputation singing under some of the world’s most distinguished conductors and appearing on radio, television, recordings and the concert platform. In 2010 the Junior Chorus has already performed Fauré’s Requiem (Concertgebouw, Amsterdam) and Britten’s War Requiem with the RSNO and RSNO Chorus and will be making appearances at the Edinburgh International Festival (BBC SSO, Royal Concertgebouw) and the BBC Proms.
