Mars, Venus, Jupiter...everyone has their favourite bit of The Planets. But there's more to Holst's masterpiece than just great melodies. Tonight, John Storgårds travels to infinity and beyond, and follows two modern geniuses into new worlds. Sir Andrzej Panufnik was a Polish asylum seeker who became one of Britain's finest post-war composers. Big symphonies awaken big feelings – and when Sibelius' Second Symphony reaches its majestic finish, it's with a melody that might just stay with you for life. It'll make a thrilling climax to a concert filled with incredible moments; from the grandeur of Beethoven's Violin Concerto, played by the incomparable James Ehnes, to John Adams' uproarious 'Foxtrot for Orchestra' as Chairman Mao, a swing band and 80s minimalism collide under the Californian sun. Shostakovich Twelve
As thoughts turn to Remembrance Day, the RSNO reflects on Petrograd, 1917: angry crowds fill the streets, the guns of a warship thunder in the distance, and the air buzzes with revolutionary songs. Shostakovich's Twelfth Symphony is all about history on a blockbuster scale - the definitive musical re-telling of the Bolshevik Revolution. But before that red dawn, a glance back at a more romantic age, as guest conductor Cristian Măcelaru welcomes the newly-crowned winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Yekwon Sunwoo, in Rachmaninov's dramatic Third Concerto.
