Up-and-coming conductors from around the globe are invited to submit their applications to become the next Assistant Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

The RSNO Assistant Conductorship is a two-year post supported by the Solti Foundation and is widely recognised as a unique opportunity for emerging conductors to develop their talent, experience, and technique. The successful candidate will assist RSNO Music Director Thomas Søndergård and have opportunities to work with guest conductors across the 2020:21 and 2021:22 Seasons.

Previous post-holders have benefitted from their time working with Scotland’s National Orchestra, with many going on to notable appointments with professional orchestras.

Holly Mathieson is now Music Director of Symphony Nova Scotia and Artistic Director of Rata Music Collective and Co-Artistic Director of the Nevis Ensemble. Christian Kluxen is signed to major international artistic agency Hazard Chase and David Danzmayr is now Music Director of Ohio’s ProMusica Chamber Orchestra and Chief Conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra.

The current RSNO Assistant Conductor Junping Qian was successful during the 2018 recruitment processes, which had more than 250 applicants from around the world. Junping’s tenure concludes at the end of the 2019:20 Season in May, brining to an end two years of working with Music Director Thomas Søndergård, and other iconic conductors including Sir Roger Norrington and Neeme Järvi.

Junping Qian said: “The Assistant Conductor position has given me the opportunity to grow from a student conductor to a professional well-rounded conductor. I would recommend it to all my conductor colleagues around the world, and I wish the next successful candidate the very best in the advancement of their career.”

Applicants should include a covering letter, CV, repertoire list, video work sample and full contact information for three professional references to assistantconductor@rsno.org.uk

The closing date for applications is 25 April 2020.

Auditions will be held in Glasgow in the Autumn.
