Thomas Søndergård Conductor

Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård is Music Director of Royal Scottish National Orchestra, following six seasons as Principal Guest Conductor. He served as Principal Conductor of BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBCNOW) from September 2012 – August 2018, and prior to this, as Principal Conductor and Musical Advisor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra for three seasons.

He has conducted many leading orchestras, including Chicago Symphony, London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw, London Symphony, Philharmonia Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic, Gothenburg Symphony, Danish National Symphony, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Bamberger Symphoniker; leading tours with Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and European Union Youth Orchestra; Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Netherlands Philharmonic, Luxembourg Philharmonic, Brussels Philharmonic; Swedish Radio Symphony, Finnish Radio Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony, Sydney Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, Houston Symphony and Seattle Symphony.

Highlights with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra this season include Berg’s Seven Early Songs with Karen Cargill, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde joined by Simon O'Neill and Jane Irwin, recording work, a European tour and performances of the Verdi Requiem.

Highlights of recent seasons include debuts with Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic, and Orchestre National de France, and many re invitations, including Atlanta Symphony, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Danish National Symphony, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Bayerische Staatsoper (Turandot), Deutsche Oper Berlin (Berlioz’s Romeo and Juliet), Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Gurzenich-Orchester Köln, SWR Baden-Baden, Sydney Symphony, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and Norwegian Opera. Recent highlights with RSNO include tours to China and the United States, premieres of new commissions and Marsalis’ Violin Concerto with Nicola Benedetti.

A passionate supporter of the music of Carl Nielsen, his most recent programme with Swedish Radio Symphony (Symphony No. 5) received wide praise as “equal of the great pioneers of Nielsen interpretation… It’s hard to imagine a finer performance of this remarkable symphony” (Dagens Nyheter). As part of the 2015 anniversary celebrations of both Sibelius and Nielsen he conducted a wide variety of their works with many leading orchestras. In 2019 he participated in a special concert to celebrate Nielsen’s work with the Royal Danish Academy of Music Copenhagen.

A highly accomplished opera conductor, he is equally at home in mainstream and contemporary repertoire. Previous opera includes Bayerische Staatsoper (Turandot), Norwegian Opera (Die Zauberflöte), Deutsche Oper Berlin (world premiere of Scartazzini’s Edward II); and Tosca, Turandot (Nina Stemme) and Les dialogues des Carmelites (Royal Swedish Opera). His Royal Danish Opera visit conducting Ruders' opera Kafka's Trial was described as a sensation: "He is one of the best things that has happened to the art of opera for many years" and subsequent productions there have included Il barbiere di Siviglia, Le Nozze di Figaro, La bohème, Cunning Little Vixen and Il viaggio a Reims.

Commercial recordings with BBCNOW include Sibelius Symphonies 1, 2, 6 & 7 and a disc of his tone poems and theatre music, featuring Finlandia and Valse Triste (Linn Records). His first release with Royal Scottish National Orchestra features music by R Strauss, the concert suite from Der Rosenkavalier and Ein Heldenleben (Linn Records). Pentatone also recently released the Lutoslawski and Dutilleux cello concertos with Johannes Moser and Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin. Earlier noteworthy recordings include Vilde Frang's celebrated debut recording for EMI, and Ruders’ Piano Concerto No. 2, (Bridge Records) which was nominated for a Gramophone Award. In 2011 he was awarded the prestigious Queen Ingrid Foundation Prize for services to Music in Denmark.

Natalya  Romaniw

Natalya Romaniw Soprano

Welsh soprano Natalya Romaniw is one of Europe’s most promising young stars. Recent winner of the 2016 Critic’s Choice Award for Music, for her ‘big toned, generous, gut-wrenching performances’ (Sunday Times) and her ‘glowing voice capable of astonishing power’ (FT), she is often hailed by the British press as ‘the outstanding soprano of her generation’ (Telegraph). Upcoming engagements include major role debuts as Cio Cio San in the acclaimed Minghella Madame Butterfly for English National Opera under the baton of Martyn Brabbins, title role in Tosca with Scottish Opera, and her return to Garsington Opera as Rusalka. She will make her BBC Proms debut in 2019 with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and will make her first solo recital recording in collaboration with pianist Lada Valesova, featuring repertoire by Dvorák, Janácek, Novák and Rachmaninov.

Highlights of her 2018:19 season include her house debut with English National Opera as Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème. She also received critical acclaim in her returns to Garsington Opera as Marenka, in Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, and to Opera Holland Park as the title role in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta. On the concert stage, she gave the world premiere of Mark Anthony Turnage’s Testament with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Natalya received unanimous critical acclaim in 2016 for her portrayal of Tatyana in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at Garsington Opera. She has since performed the role with the Welsh National Opera, and in Oliver Mears’ new production for Scottish Opera. Other notable engagements include her European debut as Suzel in L’amico Fritz for Den Jyske Opera, Lisa in Pique Dame with Opera Holland Park and National Theatre Brno, title role in Janácek’s Jenufa with Grange Park Opera, and Beethoven Symphony No9 with the Hallé orchestra under the baton of Sir Mark Elder.

She is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal in her final year. Since graduating Natalya has gone on to win many competitions including the Loveday Song Prize and the renowned Kathleen Ferrier Awards in 2012; she was a prize winner in the Houston Grand Opera Eleanor McCollum Competition; the 2017 operatic nominee in The Times breakthrough category of the Southbank Sky Arts Awards, and a finalist for the Song Prize in Cardiff Singer of the World 2009. After graduating, Natalya joined the Houston Grand Opera Studio, where she debuted roles such as Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, Micaela in Bizet’s Carmen and Krystina in Weinburg’s The Passenger. After finishing her time with Houston Grand Opera, she returned as a guest for her role debut as Ortlinde in Wagner’s Die Walküre.

Stephanie  Maitland

Stephanie Maitland Mezzo-Soprano

Stephanie Maitland is a Scottish mezzo-soprano studying on the Advanced Postgraduate Diploma at the Royal Northern College of Music, under the tuition of Jane Irwin. She will soon join the Glyndebourne chorus for their 2020 season. During the summer, she was an Alvarez Young Artist with Garsington Opera, covering the role of Mrs Grose in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, conducted by Richard Farnes and directed by Louisa Muller, and singing chorus of The Bartered Bride by Smetana, conducted by Jac van Steen and directed by Paul Curran.

Since starting at the RNCM, Stephanie has sang the roles of Mercedes in Bizet’s Carmen in 40minutes, the Sandman in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, Flora in Verdi’s La Traviata for the John Manduell Commemoration Concert, La Principessa in Suor Angelica and Zita in Gianni Schicchi in RNCM’s Puccini double bill, Madam By-ends in Vaughan William’s The Pilgrim’s Progress and La Prieure in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites. She has also sang in a masterclass with Dame Ann Murray, Susan Bullock and Della Jones and was involved in Clonter Opera’s Spring Opera Showcase and Winter Opera Gala. She was also involved in the first recording of Cellier’s Dorothy with Richard Bonynge, released by NAXOS. During the previous summer, she sang with Buxton International Festival, singing chorus and covering the role of Zuma in Verdi’s Alzira and singing chorus in Mozart’s Idomeneo.

Future engagements include singing Lady Bertram in RNCM’s production of Dove’s Mansfield Park. Stephanie was also a semi-finalist in By Voice Alone and won a Singer’s Preparation Award from Audition Oracle. She is a recipient of the Alice Orrell and A&N Kendall Award and previously held a Sybil Tutton Award from Help Musicians UK. She is the RNCM Drapers’ de Turckheim Scholar for 2019:2020 and is also supported by the Kenneth Headley Bequest. Stephanie is represented by Mark Kendall Artists Management and is mentored by Karen Cargill.

Benjamin  Hulett

Benjamin Hulett Tenor

Benjamin Hulett trained as a choral scholar at New College, Oxford and studied with David Pollard at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He was a member of the Hamburgische Staatsoper from 2005 to 2009. He has made his debuts at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, Theater an der Wien in the world premiere of Kalitzke’s Die Besessenen, the Salzburger Festspiele, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, and Opera di Roma. He sang Luzio Das Liebesverbot for Opera du Rhin Strasbourg and his first Tom Rakewell The Rake’s Progress in Caen, Limoges, Reims, Rouen and Luxembourg. In the UK, Benjamin has performed with Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Opera North, Grange Park Opera, Opera Holland Park, Garsington Opera, Welsh National Opera, and performed in Sir Jonathan Miller’s staging of St Matthew Passion at the National Theatre.

Benjamin has appeared regularly at the BBC Proms with Sir Roger Norrington, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir Andrew Davis and is increasingly in demand as an interpreter of song. Concert highlights have included Yeoman of the Guard (John Wilson) and Mendelssohn Symphony No2 (Edward Gardner) with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Arbace in Idomeneo with Fabio Biondi, Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with Norrington and Christopher Hogwood, Die Frau Ohne Schatten at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw under Vladimir Jurowski, the title role in Bach’s Lucio Silla with Ivor Bolton at the Salzburg Mozartwoche, Bernstein’s A Quiet Place with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Kent Nagano, L’heure Espagnole with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (Charles Dutoit), and Tamino in concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle.

Benjamin’s recordings range from early baroque to new commissions and have received nominations and awards from BBC Music Magazine, Gramophone, Grammy, L’Orfee d’Or and Diapason.

The last two seasons saw his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in L’heure Espagnole (Dutoit), Andres Wozzeck for the Theater and der Wien, at Carnegie Hall performing Jupiter Semele as part of an English Concert tour around the USA and Europe (Harry Bicket), with the Teatro Real Madrid as Arbace Idomeneo and as David Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in concert with the Santa Cecilia Orchestra and Antonio Pappano.

This season’s highlights include A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Simone Young) at the Wiener Staatsoper, a return to Covent Garden for Die Zauberflöte, Handel’s Saul (Théâtre du Châtelet), Fidelio at Theater an der Wien and his debut with the Hong Kong Philharmonic for Mozart’s Requiem.

Božidar  Smiljanic

Božidar Smiljanic Bass-Baritone

Božidar Smiljanic sings the title role in English National Opera’s new production of The Marriage of Figaro this season, directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins. Following his international operatic debut last season as a new member of Oper Frankfurt’s ensemble, Božidar continues there this season in his debut as Leporello (Don Giovanni) in Christof Loy’s production, Eumée in Corinna Tetzel’s new production of Fauré’s Pénélope, and Farasmane (Radamisto) amongst others, and gives his debut recital in the house. Last season in Frankfurt, he debuted a series of roles including Garibaldo in Claus Guth’s new staging of Rodelinda, Ariodate (Xerxes) under Constantinos Carydis, Sprecher (Die Zauberflöte), Hunter (Rusalka) and Zuniga in Barrie Kosky’s Carmen.

A regular on the concert platform, Božidar has already developed a relationship with a number of key conductors and orchestras with recent highlights including Bach’s Mass in B minor with Nathalie Stutzmann and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast with John Wilson and Brander in Berlioz’s La damnation de Faust with Ed Gardner, both with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Masetto (Don Giovanni) with Jakub Hruša and the Bamberger Symphoniker in Bamberg and at Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, and Handel’s Messiah with Hervé Niquet and Le Concert Spirituel, Trevor Pinnock and Das Neue Orchester Köln, and Richard Cooke and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at London’s Royal Albert Hall. With a particularly extensive concert repertoire, Božidar’s further performances include Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, Fauré’s Requiem, and Beethoven’s Symphony No.9, as well as a large number of Bach’s cantatas which he performed under Masaaki Suzuki on tour in the UK, USA and Germany whilst still a student.

Born and raised in London, Božidar made his professional debut at the 2014 Glyndebourne Festival, and has since debuted with some of the major UK companies, including Scottish Opera (Schaunard in La bohème), Garsington Opera (Haly in L’italiana in Algeri) Glyndebourne on Tour (Masetto), before joining English National Opera as a Harewood Artist last season.

During his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, Božidar amassed a variety of operatic roles and was particularly singled out as Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress), with Opera describing his performance as “charismatic and velvet-voiced, simmering with subtle menace beneath his bonhomie and roaring magnificently in defeat”. Further roles include Monterone (Rigoletto), Le Roi (Cendrillon), Superintendent Budd (Albert Herring), Betto (Gianni Schicchi), The Mayor in Rimsky-Korsakov’s May Night and Luka in Walton’s The Bear.

Katherine  Bryan

Katherine Bryan Flute

Katherine Bryan made her concerto debut at the age of 15 with Daniel Harding and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in London, and later made her US concerto debut at New York’s Lincoln Center with the Juilliard Orchestra. She has since performed as soloist with the BBC Philharmonic, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Hallé, Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and English Baroque Soloists.

Katherine's debut solo recording of the Nielsen and Liebermann flute concertos, Poulenc Flute Sonata (orchestrated by Sir Lennox Berkeley) and Hüe Fantasie, with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Paul Daniel, was released to great acclaim in September 2010. Following this success, Katherine released a further disc of concertos in May 2013, including works by Ibert, Martin and Rouse. Katherine's recording of the Rouse Flute Concerto is the work’s first ever British recording. Her latest album, Silver Bow, described by the Scotsman as ‘a breathtaking package’, is a collection of transcriptions of music for violin and orchestra including Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, and was released in September 2015. It was chosen as one of Classic FM's top 20 albums of 2015.

A winner of the prestigious Audi Music Competition, Katherine studied at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester, and won a full scholarship to study flute at the Juilliard School, New York, with Jeanne Baxtresser and Carol Wincenc. She was a prizewinner in the Royal Overseas League Music Competition, and in the Young Concert Artists International Competition in New York, and she was a finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year for three consecutive competitions. She was awarded the Julius Isserlis Scholarship by the Royal Philharmonic Society.

At the age of just 21 she was appointed Principal Flute with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, a position she still holds today in addition to appearing as concerto soloist with leading orchestras worldwide. Katherine is currently a lecturer in flute at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Chetham’s School of Music. She is a regular guest principal with the Philharmonia Orchestra, and has also played guest principal with the London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, BBC Scotttish Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony and London Symphony Orchestras, as well as with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, Hallé and Seattle Symphony.

Katherine has appeared at major international festivals, including the Cheltenham Music Festival, as both concerto soloist and recitalist. She has given live broadcasts on Classic FM, BBC Radio 3 and BBC television. Forthcoming projects include a new solo album for Chandos Records.

 RSNO Chorus

RSNO Chorus  

The RSNO Chorus performs in around six different programmes in up to twenty concerts across Scotland with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra each year. The RSNO Chorus has also had great success in recording with the Orchestra. Its recordings, amongst others, of Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky, conducted by Neeme J?rvi, and Holst’s The Planets, conducted by David Lloyd-Jones, have both attracted high critical acclaim.

In addition to its commitment to the Orchestra, the RSNO Chorus performs independently and has been invited to perform with orchestras in many parts of the world, establishing an international status and touring to Copenhagen, Hong Kong, Israel, Germany, Belfast, Australia, Trondheim and most recently, Amsterdam and Prague. In 2018 it performed Britten’s War Requiem with the RSNO at the BBC Proms.

The RSNO Chorus evolved from a choir formed in 1843 to sing the first full performance of Handel’s Messiah in Scotland. Today, it is one of the most successful choruses in the UK. In recent years, it has performed practically every work in the standard choral repertoire along with contemporary works by renowned composers, including John Adams, Magnus Lindberg, Howard Shore and James MacMillan.

The RSNO Chorus is directed by Gregory Batsleer, one of the UK’s most dynamic and in demand choral conductors and chorus masters. In 2015 Gregory received The Arts Foundation Fellowship in Choral Conducting.
