When Mozart wrote his piano concertos, he expected to perform them in person. Sadly he can’t be with us today, but we’ve got the next best thing, as star pianist Ingrid Fliter and presenter Tom Redmond join Thomas Søndergård and the RSNO to explore Mozart’s enchanting Piano Concerto No23. With anecdotes, analysis and of course lots and lots of glorious music, it’s as close as we can get to a conversation with Amadeus himself!

Thomas Søndergård Conductor

Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård is Music Director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, after six seasons as Principal Guest Conductor. He served as Principal Conductor of BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBCNOW) from September 2012 – August 2018, and prior to this, as Principal Conductor and Musical Advisor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra for three seasons.

Thomas has conducted many leading orchestras, including London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Göteborgs Symfoniker, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Bamberger Symphoniker; leading tours with Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and European Union Youth Orchestra; Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Brussels Philharmonic; Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National d’Ile de France; Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony and Seattle Symphony Orchestra.

He makes return visits to Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra of the Royal Danish Academy Copenhagen, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Bayerische Staatsoper (Turandot) and Deutsche Oper Berlin (Berlioz’s Romeo and Juliet). Plans with RSNO include tours to China and the United States, premieres of new commissions and Marsalis’ Violin Concerto with Nicola Benedetti.

Recent highlights include debuts with Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Bern Symphony Orchestra, Gurzenich-Orchester Köln, SWR Baden-Baden, Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg and return visits to Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and the revival of The Magic Flute with Norwegian Opera.

A passionate supporter of the music of Carl Nielsen, his most recent programme with Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra (Symphony No. 5) received wide praise as “equal of the great pioneers of Nielsen interpretation… It’s harder to imagine a finer performance of this remarkable symphony” (Dagens Nyheter). As part of the 2015 anniversary celebrations of both Sibelius and Nielsen he conducted a wide variety of works by these two composers with many leading orchestras. In 2019 he will participate in a special concert to celebrate Nielsen’s work with the Royal Danish Academy of Music Copenhagen.

Thomas is also an experienced opera conductor at home in mainstream and contemporary repertoire. Previous opera includes Bayerische Staatsoper (Turandot), Norwegian Opera (Die Zauberflöte), Deutsche Oper Berlin (world premiere of Scartazzini’s Edward II) and Tosca, Turandot (Nina Stemme) and Les dialogues des Carmelites for Kungliga Operan (Royal Swedish Opera). He was described as “a sensation” at his debut with the Royal Danish Opera conducting Ruders' opera Kafka's Trial: "He is one of the best things that has happened to the art of opera for many years" and subsequent productions there have included Il barbiere di Siviglia, Le Nozze di Figaro, La bohème, Cunning Little Vixen and Il viaggio a Reims.

Releases with BBCNOW include Sibelius Symphonies 1, 2, 6 & 7 and most recently a disc which shines light on Sibelius’ tone poems and theatre music, featuring Finlandia and Valse Triste (Linn Records). Other noteworthy recordings include Vilde Frang's celebrated first recording for EMI, and Ruders’ Piano Concerto No. 2 on Bridge Records which was nominated for a Gramophone Award in 2011. In 2011 he was awarded the prestigious Queen Ingrid Foundation Prize for services to Music in Denmark. Due for release shortly are the Lutoslawski and Dutilleux cello concertos with Johannes Moser and Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin for Pentatone.

Tom Redmond Presenter

Tom Redmond is a broadcaster, presenter, horn player and animateur. He presents for BBC Radio 3 from concert halls and festivals across the UK including Aldeburgh, Edinburgh and the BBC Proms. As a horn player he has performed throughout Europe, Japan, Russia, South East Asia and the USA with orchestras including the City of Birmingham and London Symphony orchestras, Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Philharmonia.

He was a member of the Hallé for 13 years before relinquishing his position in 2016 to allow him more time to work within music education and broadcasting.

Tom has introduced classical music to over 250,000 young people and their families in interactive concerts with the Hallé, City of Birmingham, Scottish Chamber, Royal Scottish National, Ulster and RTÉ National Symphony Orchestras, Welsh National Opera and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He is involved with the BBC’s Ten Pieces project, leading creative workshops with its celebrity ambassadors, and he was the orchestra consultant for the project’s ebook.

As an animateur he has led creative workshops in a variety of musical environments, from prisons to music hubs and state and public schools. He has recently devised and delivered a series of corporate training workshops to highlight the effects of inspirational leadership in the workplace, using the orchestra as an example of a high performance team.

Tom is the horn tutor at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music and Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester and has a close relationship with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and its INSPIRE program.

Recent and future presenting highlights include narrating Britten’s Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra with the Britten Pears Orchestra in Aldeburgh, Insights at the Royal Opera House, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt with the Hallé, a family concert at the Hong Kong Arts Festival with Welsh National Opera, and return visits to the CBSO, RTENSO and RSNO. At the Royal Albert Hall he hosted a concert for young people with Lang Lang and has, since October 2016, curated and presented three My Great Orchestral Adventures; the RAH’s sell out family spectacular.

Argentine pianist Ingrid Fliter has won the admiration and hearts of audiences around the world for her passionate yet thoughtful and sensitive music making played with an effortless technique. Winner of the 2006 Gilmore Artist Award, one of only a handful of pianists and the only woman to have received this honor, Ms. Fliter divides her time between North America and Europe.

Ingrid Fliter made her American orchestral debut with the Atlanta Symphony, just days after the announcement of her Gilmore award. Since then she has appeared with the Cleveland and Minnesota Orchestras, the San Francisco, St. Louis, Detroit, National, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Seattle, Vancouver, Puerto Rico and Utah symphonies and the National Arts Centre Orchestra among others, as well as at the Mostly Mozart, Grant Park, Aspen, Ravinia, Blossom and Brevard summer festivals. She was also the featured soloist on the Youth Orchestra of the Americas Canadian tour in summer 2015. Equally busy as a recitalist, Ms. Fliter has performed in New York at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall, the Metropolitan Museum and the 92nd Street Y, at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, and in Boston, San Francisco, Vancouver and Detroit, as well as for the Van Cliburn Foundation in Fort Worth.

In Europe and Asia, Ms. Fliter has performed with orchestras and in recital in Amsterdam, London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Salzburg, Cologne and Tokyo, and participated in festivals such as La Roque D’Antheron, Prague Autumn and The World Pianist Series in Tokyo. Recent international engagements include appearances with the Rotterdam, Israel, Hong Kong, Monte Carlo, Osaka, Helsinki and Royal Stockholm Philharmonics, the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony and the Proms in London, as well as the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Danish Radio and Danish National Symphony Orchestras and the Scottish and Swedish Chamber Orchestras; and recitals in Paris, Barcelona, Milan, Prague, Stockholm, Lisbon, Sydney and in London at both Wigmore Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Recent and upcoming performance highlights include her debut with the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood, re-engagements with the Toronto, Dallas, Houston, Vancouver, New World and Nashville symphonies and first appearances with the Rochester and Louisiana Philharmonics; a tour of Spain with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra led by Peter Oundjian; and a fifth tour to Australia. Born in Buenos Aires in 1973, Ingrid Fliter began her piano studies in Argentina with Elizabeth Westerkamp. In 1992 she moved to Europe where she continued her studies in Freiburg with Vitaly Margulis, in Rome with Carlos Bruno, and with Franco Scala and Boris Petrushansky at the Academy “Incontrui col Maestro” in Imola, Italy. Ms. Fliter began playing public recitals at the age of eleven and made her professional orchestra debut at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires at the age of 16. Already the winner of several competitions in Argentina, she went on to win prizes at the Cantu International Competition and the Ferruccio Busoni Competition in Italy and in 2000 was awarded the silver medal at the Frederic Chopin Competition in Warsaw. She has been teaching at the Imola International Academy "Incontri col Maestro” since the fall of 2015.

In June 2013 Ms. Fliter recorded both Chopin concertos with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra/Jun Maerkl for Linn Records, and in June 2014 she recorded the complete Chopin Preludes for the same label. Her two all-Chopin recordings for EMI earned her the reputation as one of the pre-eminent interpreters of that composer while her most recent EMI recording is an all-Beethoven CD featuring the Pathetique and Appassionata sonatas. Live recordings of Ms. Fliter performing works by Beethoven and Chopin at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam as well as a DVD of a recital at the Miami International Piano Festival are available on the VAI Audio label. Her most recent recording features the first Mendelssohn and Schumann concertos with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and she records the complete Chopin Nocturnes in November 2017, both for Linn Records.
