Sir Alexander Gibson Fellowship for Choral Conductors 2019:20 

Sarah Charista is a choral conductor from Indonesia. Awarded a music scholarship, she studied Postgraduate in Choral Conducting at the University of Birmingham under Simon Halsey, Simon Carrington and Julian Wilkins supervision. Known for her enthusiasm, Sarah was appointed as the Assistant Musical Director at the Summer Festival Opera at the University of Birmingham. Sarah was taught by Budi Utomo Prabowo and attended the Choral Conducting Workshop (by Goethe-Institut Indonesien) in 2016 by Nicolas Fink, which led her to pursue a career in conducting. Sarah was the co-founder and chief Musical Director of Youth Ministry FIRES Choir and section Leader in some Jakarta Oratorio Society projects.

As an active musician, Sarah plays piano, has accompanied several solo performances and was a reserved accompanist in Jakarta Oratorio Society Youth Choir. She took orchestral conducting masterclasses with a Norwegian Professor, Sigmund Thorp, and joined Jakarta Christian Youth Orchestra as the second principal violin and as a rehearsal assistant. She also regularly served as a church organist.

Graduating in a voice performance major for her undergraduate study at Universitas Pelita Harapan, Sarah has appeared as a chorister in numerous concerts in Aula Simfonia Jakarta Concert Hall with Jakarta Oratorio Society under the baton of Stephen Tong, Jahja Ling, Masaaki Suzuki, and many more.

Apart from Sarah’s performance experiences, she enjoys teaches piano and singing to students of various ages. Her aim is to help people enjoy making music in any circumstances. She would like to give much gratitude to her parents, teachers and friends who have supported her.
