The music of Scotland is as diverse as the nation itself, and it's never been in better health! This Season we present a series of Scotch Snaps - six short pieces composed by some of Scotland's finest living composers. Craig Armstrong and Christopher Duncan rescue lost melodies from St Kilda, David Fennessy reads the Riot Act; and Michael Murray and RSNO Composers' Hub Alumnus Jay Capperauld put the RSNO's own players centre stage. No two are alike, yet together they add up to a musical snapshot of a nation. If a picture can paint a thousand words, imagine what Scotland's National Orchestra can do in a live performance!

The Scotch Snaps series is supported by the Fidelio Charitable Trust.

Concerts included in the Scotch Snaps series:

The Rite of Spring

Prepare to be blown away! When The Rite of Spring was premiered in 1913, it caused a riot. We’d rather you didn’t rip the chairs out today, but there’s no question – with Elim Chan conducting – Stravinsky’s revolutionary ballet still packs a powerful punch. With a subversive new showpiece…

When Mendelssohn sailed to Staffa, so taken was he by the sights and sounds that he quickly penned the opening of the Hebrides Overture. Nearly two centuries later, the Scottish composer Craig Armstrong captured the spirit of St Kilda in ravishing music. These two Scottish classics are united by a…

Paul Lewis Plays Grieg

Paul Lewis has been called ‘the finest British pianist for generations’. Tonight, he joins the RSNO to perform Grieg’s unabashedly romantic Piano Concerto, which dances and dazzles with hints of Norwegian melodies. It’s a beautiful contrast to Brahms’ tempestuous, triumphant First Symphony, and the perfect way to follow Fèin-Aithne, our…

Nicola Benedetti Plays Simpson

No-one makes music come alive quite like Nicola Benedetti, and she’s passionate about bringing the new Violin Concerto by the young Liverpudlian composer Mark Simpson to Scotland. But that’s not all. There’s a musical voyage to St Kilda, a blaze of folk fiddle from rural Hungary, and to round it…
