The Golden Age of Vienna

Join Music Director Thomas Søndergård as we journey back to Golden Age of Vienna – a time when Austria’s most important personalities in the arts, letters and philosophy crossed paths and the city saw a rich flowering of masterworks. Across three evenings, enjoy three of Gustav Mahler’s greatest works – Mahler Symphony No1 (October 2019), Das Lied von der Erde (March 2020) and Mahler Symphony No4 (May 2020) – paired with the colourful tone poems of Richard Strauss. Plus, don’t miss our In Focus event at the start of the Season in which Thomas Søndergård and a panel of guests will visit the Vienna of Gustav Mahler, Sigmund Freud, Gustav Klimt and even our very own Charles Rennie Mackintosh (October 2019).

‘...What a world of sound and colour this pianist conjured up. Rarely do you witness such textural detail, so delicately balanced. This was a masterclass in the true beauty of pianism, delivered with an intelligent and instinctive musicality.’ The Scotsman

We’re delighted to welcome world-renowned Scottish pianist Steven Osborne as our Artist in Residence this Season. Steven will be performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No27 (November 2019) and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No4 (April 2020) in addition to a solo chamber recital of Beethoven Sonatas (March 2020) as part of our Beethoven Revolution series. Plus, join Steven in November for his In Focus talk on the theme of what music means (November 2019).

In 2020 we celebrate Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday. Our Beethoven Revolution series is filled with some of Beethoven’s finest works performed alongside music by composers who were revolutionaries in their own right – Debussy, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Berlioz and more.
