Under Stalin’s regime, sometimes only music could speak the truth. The Soviet authorities called Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony an ‘optimistic tragedy’, but this vast, brooding masterpiece is actually a shatteringly powerful portrait of a human spirit battling impossible odds.
