Søndergård Conducts Rachmaninov One

Catriona Morison, Mezzo-Soprano

In the Hall of the Mountain King is just one of the many melodies we all know and love from Grieg's epic Peer Gynt. Its menacing, ever quickening tune is guaranteed to grab your attention and raise your pulse with its sheer driving power. But that's not all! In Ravel's gorgeous Shéhérazade we hear from Scottish mezzo-soprano and Cardiff Singer of the World 2017, Catriona Morison, and after the interval we explore Rachmaninov's gloriously delicate yet bold first symphony, full of blazing brass and earthy strings. Come and hear it for yourself!

Dvořák's New World SymphonyKristof Barati

Some pieces are classics for a reason – and when it comes to the New World Symphony we don’t just mean the Hovis ad! Dvořák's great symphony of exile, hope and nostalgia has been stirring the emotions of audiences ever since 1893, and the Violin Concerto by his great friend Brahms is every bit as enjoyable too. Violinist Kristóf Baráti gives it a dash of Hungarian spice tonight – but first, conductor Gilbert Varga shares a magical rediscovery from Wales.

Impatient pianists, practical jokers, and an overenthusiastic bulldog. Elgar dedicated his Enigma Variations to ‘my friends pictured within’, and if all you know of them is Nimrod, you’re about to meet some of the most loveable characters in British music. It’s a joyous finale to a musical journey that begins inside the fantastic imagination of Hong Kong-born Fung Lam, and finds violinist Benjamin Beilman deep in the Finnish forests of Sibelius’ hugely popular Violin Concerto.
