Visual Artist Tatsuru Arai

Tatsuru Arai is a composer and media artist whose work bridges classical and contemporary music with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and computer systems. His artistic practice explores new musical languages that transcend traditional cultural and temporal boundaries, proposing concepts such as Trans-Ages Music and Hyper-Serial Music. In 2023, music based on these concepts was performed at the Philharmonie de Paris as part of a program of the Ensemble Intercontemporain  founded by Pierre Boulez at Biennale Némo.

Face of Universe is a sound and visual art series exploring universal and natural phenomena through music and computational media. Focusing on the relationship between Earth’s ecosystem and the sun’s nuclear fusion energy, the project portrays wildflowers in urban landscapes as a symbolic “face of the universe,” representing the coexistence of nature and human society.

He studied composition at Tokyo College of Music and the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music Berlin with Akira Nishimura, Toshio Hosokawa, and Wolfgang Heiniger, and also studied with Bernhard Lang at the impuls  in Graz.

His works have been presented internationally, including performances and exhibitions at the Philharmonie de Paris, Berlin Philharmonic Hall, ISEA 2023 (France), Transmediale at Silent Green (Berlin), RIXC at the National Library of Latvia (Riga) including Art Basel Hong Kong, Art Dubai, and Dangdai Art & Ideas (Taiwan), as well as Asia Culture Center (Gwangju, Korea) and CIKE (Slovakia).
