New Associate Principal Bassoon for Scotland’s National Orchestra as it begins its 2026:27 Season Posted Thu 10 September 2026
The Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) celebrates the start of its 2026:27 Season with the appointment of Matthew Kitteringham to Associate Principal Bassoon.
A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Wirral-born bassoonist has studied under the likes of Laurence Perkins and Robin O’Neill. In his younger years, Kitteringham gained invaluable experience with the Junior Royal Northern College of Music, the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. As a freelancer, Kitteringham has performed with some of the UK’s top orchestra, most notably and regularly with the Philharmonia and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
On his appointment to the RSNO’s woodwind section, Kitteringham said: ‘I’m really looking forward to starting this next chapter of my life at the RSNO. It has been a real pleasure getting to know everyone during my time on trial, and I feel very lucky to be joining such a friendly and dedicated woodwind section. After many exciting and rewarding concerts so far, looking ahead at the programmes and artists for next season tells me there will be many more to come. I’m also excited to discover more of what Glasgow has to offer and explore more of Scotland’s incredible natural beauty.’
RSNO Principal Bassoon David Hubbard welcomed Kitteringham to the Orchestra saying: ‘We’re thrilled to have Matt joining us in the bassoon section as the new Associate Principal. He was the standout candidate in what was an incredibly strong field of trialists, and I am very much looking forward to working with him.’
Kitteringham joins his new colleagues on the stage for the first time as a permanent member of the Orchestra on Friday night (18 September) at the Usher Hall for the RSNO’s Season 2026:27 opening concert, Mahler Six.
