Read bio

Kerem Hasan commences his third season as chief conductor of the Tiroler Symphonieorchester Innsbruck, after starting this position in September 2019. In Summer 2017, the young British conductor laid the foundations for a very promising international career by winning the Nestlé and Salzburg Young Conductors Award. Prior to this, he had already attracted attention as a finalist in the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in London and as Associate Conductor of the Welsh National Opera.

Apart from his concerts with the Tiroler Symphonieorchester, Kerem also returns to the Tiroler Landestheater in Innsbruck to conduct Rossini’s “L’italiana in Algeri“ and Mozart‘s “Die Zauberflöte“. Further highlights of his 2021/22 season include opera productions at the English National Opera (“Così van tutte“) and in Glyndebourne (“The Rake’s Progress“) as well as concerts with the Tonkünstlerorchester Niederösterreich, Borusan Philharmonic Orchestra and Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. Furthermore, Hasan debuts with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia and returns to the ORF Radio Symphonieorchester Wien, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Noord Nederlands Orkest. June 2022 sees him making his US debut with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra followed by concerts with the Minnesota Orchestra and at the Aspen Music Festival.

Hasan’s previous engagements include opera performances in Glyndebourne (“Die Zauberflöte”), with the Welsh National Opera (“La Forza del Destino”) and at the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck (“Samson et Dalila”, “Rigoletto”, “The Rape of Lucretia”). He has conducted concerts with the Concertgebouworkest, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, SWR Symphonieorchester, MDR Sinfonieorchester, ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Filarmonica Teatro La Fenice and New Japan Philharmonic. In masterclasses, he received valuable advice from David Zinman, Edo de Waart, Gianandrea Noseda and Esa-Pekka Salonen. On the invitation of his mentor Bernard Haitink, he assisted him with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Concertgebouworkest and Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.

In the summer of 2016, Kerem Hasan first attended the Conducting Academy of the Aspen Music Festival, where he worked with Robert Spano. In 2017, he returned to the festival as Conducting Fellow and was subsequently awarded the Aspen Conductor Prize. As Assistant Conductor, he was in Aspen again in summer 2018.

Kerem Hasan, born in London in 1992, studied piano and conducting at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Later, he continued his education at the Zurich University of the Arts with Johannes Schlaefli.

Conductor Tabita Berglund

Read bio

Tabita Berglund is rapidly establishing herself as one of today’s most exciting, talented young conductors. Recently appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra from 2021/22, following her debut engagement with them in 2020, she was the 2018–20 star of the Talent Norway programme and is a past recipient of the Gstaad Conducting Academy’s Neeme Järvi Prize (2018).

Recent engagements include Nordic debuts with the Oslo Philharmonic, Bergen Philharmonic, Finnish Radio Symphony, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Trondheim Symphony, Stavanger Symphony, Arctic Philharmonic and Norwegian National Opera orchestras. In the 2020/21 season Berglund returned to the Hallé and Norwegian Radio Orchestra, following debuts in 2019. She also appeared for the first time with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada and Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, among others.

The 2021/22 season builds on the success of previous seasons and features Berglund’s first concerts as Principal Guest Conductor of the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra – repertoire and soloist highlights include Elgar’s Enigma Variations, Britten’s Concerto for Piano No.1 and Leif Ove Andsnes. She returns to the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Hallé and Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, while making her French debut with the Orchestre National de Lille and her Austrian debut with the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich. First-time appearances include the Tampere Philharmonic, Tapiola Sinfonietta and Helsingborg Symphony orchestras, as well as the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife and Istanbul Music Festival (Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra). Berglund also conducts the Norwegian National Youth Orchestra in the summer of 2022.

The ever-changing nature which surrounds her hometown in the Norwegian mountains is an inspiring influence on Berglund, and this together with other artistic and musical issues plays an important role in her programming. The inherent connection between the art of leadership and the role of a conductor is also something to which Berglund attaches particular importance: “The goal is to become a conductor whom I would have wanted to play under myself.”

Berglund graduated in 2019 from the Orchestral Conducting Masters course at the Norwegian Academy of Music, where she studied under Professor Ole Kristian Ruud. She originally trained as a cellist and studied to Master’s degree level under Truls Mørk, performing regularly with the Oslo and Bergen Philharmonic orchestras as well as the Trondheim Soloists before conducting became her main focus in 2015. She has previously participated in masterclasses with Bernard Haitink, Jorma Panula and Jaap van Zweden, as well as a BBC Philharmonic workshop in September 2018.

When did you join the RSNO?
January 2022.
Where are you from?
Glasgow.
Where did you study?
I studied at the RSAMD in Glasgow, the Hochschule für Künste Bremen, and the Menuhin Academy in Switzerland.
What do you enjoy most about being in the RSNO?
Playing music for a living.
Tell us your favourite RSNO story/memory so far.
The tour this year that included Vienna and Ljubljana, and playing Götterdämmerung at the Edinburgh Festival in 2019.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not playing with the Orchestra?
Getting away to a remote spot in our converted Transit campervan, with my other half Helena and our two kids. Also, messing around on my guitar.
Do you have any hidden talents?
Yes.
If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be, and why?
The Buddha, for some tips, and John Lambie, arguably Scotland’s greatest ever sporting mind.
You’re stranded on a desert island. You’re allowed 3 CDs and 1 book. What would they be, and why?
It’s impossible to choose but on this occasion: Quatuor Mosaïques’ recording of the late Beethoven Quartets, because it’s infinitely fascinating music and I especially love this Quartet’s interpretations on gut strings; “Kid A” by Radiohead because it was a favourite record growing up; and “Brilliant Corners” by Thelonius Monk because of his piano playing and songs. As for a book, I would genuinely choose “100 Years of Solitude” by Marquez, as I don’t think I’ve enjoyed any book more, despite being aware that it leaves me open to Dad joke accusations.

When did you join the RSNO?
I joined the RSNO in March 2022.

Where are you from?
I am from Helensburgh.

Where did you study?
I studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

What do you enjoy most about being in the RSNO?
I enjoy the variety of repertoire we play and being musically inspired by others around me.

Tell us your favourite RSNO story/memory so far.
During a rehearsal with Jörg Widmann there was a power outage and we sadly had to abandon the rehearsal. It was worth it though to see the smiles on everybody’s faces as we got to go home early.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not playing with the Orchestra?
I enjoy cooking and was persuaded to purchase a Kamado Joe BBQ smoker by our resident chef Kennedy in the cello section. It definitely makes cooking at Christmas more fun!

If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be, and why?
I would love to have dinner with Victoria Coren Mitchell. She is a professional poker player and the quiz show host of Only Connect and think she would be a really fun dinner companion.

You’re stranded on a desert island. You’re allowed 3 CDs and 1 book. What would they be, and why?
1. The complete Haydn string quartet cycle by the Aeolian quartet, timeless recordings in which you can hear the Scottish violist Watson Forbes.
2. A CD with as many Queen songs as possible, which I would play at full volume.
3. Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock as it evokes happy memories.

My current book choice would be The Goldfinch by Donna Tart.
