Soprano Gabriela Scherer

Gabriela Scherer was raised in Zurich and studied with Prof. Horiana Branisteanu at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. She completed her studies attending the Opera Studio Zurich and in masterclasses with Angelika Kirchschlager, Francisco Araiza and Bernarda Fink. She started her career as member of the ensemble at Leipzig Opera and then at Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich.

Gabriela Scherer has performed several major roles as young dramatic soprano, therefore highlights in the current season include Senta in the new production of Der fliegende Holländer at Deutsche Oper am Rhein and her role debut as Maddalena (Andrea Chénier) at St. Galler Festspiele.

In the 21/22 season she made two exciting debuts, her house and role debut as Floria Tosca in Puccini’s Tosca at Theater Dortmund as well as her long awaited role debut as Elsa in a new production of Wagner’s Lohengrin, alongside Klaus Florian Vogt in the title role at Leipzig Opera. As well at Leipzig Opera, she sang Freia (Das Rheingold) during the Wagner Festival 2022 and had her house debut in a last minute jump-in with the title role of Strauss‘ Ariadne auf Naxos at Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin.

In 2021 Gabriela Scherer sang a gala concert with the Philharmonie Salzburg under the baton of Elisabeth Fuchs in the Festspielhaus Salzburg and sang excerpts of Strauss‘ Arabella and Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer at Wiesbaden State Theatre. During the pandemic, the soprano sang among others an open air concert with the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie under the baton of Markus Bosch.

Highlights of the past seasons include Contessa (Le nozze di Figaro) and the title role in Gluck’s Iphigenie au Tauride at Semperoper Dresden, Arabella at Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Ariadne auf Naxos at Theater Lübeck, Elisabetta (Don Carlos), Agathe (Der Freischütz) at Leipzig Opera and her debut as Senta at Wiesbaden State Opera. Furthermore she was guest at Opéra national de Paris, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Theater Luzern, Stadttheater Klagenfurt, Heidenheim Opera Festival.

She has worked with conductors such as Simone Young, Thomas Hengelbrock, Kent Nagano, Riccardo Chailly, Asher Fisch, Ulf Schirmer, John Eliot Gardiner, Lawrence Foster, Christopher Hogwood, Marek Janowski, Markus Bosch.
