RSNO Film Composers Lab returns in partnership with GMAC Film Posted Wed 28 August 2024
The Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) has partnered with Glasgow-based media centre GMAC Film to deliver its flagship professional development scheme, Film Composers Lab.
Now in its third year, five selected composers will additionally benefit from the use of the RSNO’s recently revamped control room for Scotland’s Studio; its state-of-the-art commercial recording studio based in the heart of Glasgow.
The RSNO’s Film Composers Lab is a pioneering programme which offers early-career, UK-based composers the experience of composing for the screen and the opportunity to collaborate with a professional orchestra. Working closely with the Orchestra, RSNO staff and experts from the film and music industries, participants will rescore an existing short film, creating a brand-new composition which will be recorded by Scotland’s National Orchestra at Scotland’s Studio. This year, the partnership with GMAC Film will link aspiring film composers directly with their film-making peers, providing networking opportunities and key industry experience.
The five successful candidates will be mentored by industry professionals John Lunn (Downtown Abbey, Shetland, The Last Kingdom) and film and video game composer Danai Kokogia, co-mentor of the RSNO’s Film Composers Lab since its pilot. The project will culminate in a public screening in July 2025 of all the newly scored films and one of the works will be selected for performance as part of the RSNO’s 2025:26 Concert Season.
RSNO Director of Engagement Andy Stevenson said: “I’m thrilled to welcome back the RSNO’s Film Composers Lab scheme, now in its third year and in partnership with the brilliant creatives at GMAC Film. Their collaboration enhances our offering to budding film composers and provides a unique insight into the practices of this specialist industry. Working together with our returning mentors, John and Danai, in the world-class recording facility at Scotland’s Studio, I’m excited to see what this next cohort produce.”
Film Composers Lab will be delivered across seven sessions between November 2024 and July 2025. The deadline for applications is 13 September 2024. For further information visit: rsno.org.uk/composers-lab/
