RSNO launches unique open call for short film animators Posted Mon 22 September 2025
The Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) is opening applications for short animation filmmakers to have their films rescored by emerging composers and recorded by Scotland’s National Orchestra.
For the first time, the RSNO is inviting applications from UK-based short animation filmmakers to have their works rescored as part of Film Composers Lab 2025:26. The animated short films will support emerging composing talent in developing their score-writing skills under the guidance of leading industry experts. This unique opportunity offers five successful animators the chance to hear new musical interpretations of their works recorded by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and provides a platform for showcasing their works to new audiences at a public screening in Glasgow of all the newly scored films during the summer of 2026.
Film Composers Lab is the RSNO’s flagship professional development scheme which offers early-career composers the opportunity to compose for screen as well as work closely with a professional symphony orchestra, project mentors, experienced film composers and seasoned screen industry professionals. In partnership with GMAC Film, Film Composers Lab links aspiring composers directly with their film-making peers, providing networking opportunities and key industry experience, providing insight into the practices of the industry.
RSNO Director of Engagement Andy Stevenson said: ‘Broadening access to opportunities within the arts is something we are really passionate about at the RSNO and so I’m so pleased that we are opening up applications nationwide for short film animators to have their work rescored. This is a rare chance for animators to have a bespoke soundtrack recorded to picture by a professional symphony orchestra in a world-class recording facility in which soundtracks for films, television and video games have been recorded. I encourage any short film animators to apply.’
The deadline for the open call to short animation filmmakers is 5pm on Friday 7 November 2025.
