With profound musical understanding, brilliant technique, and an exceptionally engaging stage presence, Jan Lisiecki presents Mendelssohn’s colourful and rarely heard First Piano Concerto this evening at the Kurhaus Wiesbaden. The work demands a finely balanced dialogue between soloist and orchestra—a challenge that Lisiecki and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra are only too happy to accept. Under the direction of its chief conductor, Thomas Søndergård, the RSNO, for its Rheingau Music Festival debut, brings not only Malcolm Arnold’s Four Scottish Dances but also Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, a work perfectly suited to the sonic brilliance and impressive stylistic versatility of this ensemble.
