10 years of the RSNO Centre: All Together Now

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the RSNO Centre. As well as being the home of Scotland’s National Orchestra, it also provides a rehearsal and performance space for the RSNO’s Community Orchestra: All Together Now.

All Together Now has its roots in an online community that came together during the pandemic, and it has been led for the past few years by conductor Robert Baxter. This Season, the Community Orchestra has around 120 members ranging from people who have been playing for six months or less, to many returning RSNO members. The Community Orchestra’s name, All Together Now, really encapsulates the tone of the orchestra and is very inclusive group of players of all ages from all over Scotland.

All Together Now rehearse and perform in the RSNO Centre, with the New Auditorium being one of few spaces in the city that can house the ever-expanding group. The players particularly appreciate the RSNO Centre’s location as many of them travel from across the country for rehearsals, with one player even travelling down from Inverness! Therefore, the Centre’s central location between Glasgow’s transport hubs is a lifeline for those commuting to rehearsals. One player is delighted that, ‘[t]here is plenty of space for sectional rehearsals as well as an auditorium capable of handling a large orchestra. The RSNO Centre is […] accessible since it is next door to the bus station and near to Queen Street train station.’

The players also love being able to rehearse and perform in the same space that the professionals do. One player shared that ‘the opportunity to perform on the stage in well-known music venues associated with one of the best orchestras in the world is amazing’. The players also appreciate the rare opportunity to have access to high-quality tutoring from RSNO musicians in a purpose-built rehearsal and concert space.

The highlight of the Community Orchestra’s year is a final showcase concert and celebratory ceilidh held in the New Auditorium which is a culmination of all the players’ hard work throughout the year! One player expressed, I have loved meeting people of all ages, my confidence has increased, I would never have imagined that I would play on a stage in an orchestra, self-discipline to practice increased, and my playing [has] definitely improved between September and May, plus it is a lot of fun’.
